Mini-Review Round-Up: SFF Corner

It’s time for a break from the history stuff with some mini-reviews of science fiction and fantasy

This site usually focuses on history, historical fiction, or writing historical fiction. I’ve been writing the sequel to my first novel, so I’ve had to immerse myself in World War II history. Writing fantasy stories and reading fantasy and science fiction offer a welcome break. Here are some mini-reviews of SFF books I’ve recently finished.

Review: Mycroft Holmes, by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anna Waterhouse

This is no celebrity vanity project, but a well-researched, rollicking historical mystery.

In my Justice League book tag, I mentioned the leaps and bounds that Mycroft Holmes takes in escaping its slow start. Basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a self-confessed Sherlock Holmes nut. It’s clear he treated this story about Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft seriously, with meticulous nods to Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s original work and to period details. This book could have degenerated into an Easter Egg hunt, but instead, Adbul-Jabbar and writing partner Anna Waterhouse took chances with their creativity. What could have been lazy tribute went to places far beyond Conan Doyle’s own imagining. And it’s all packaged in an engaging mystery read.

Oh yeah, and the over/under on basketball references in this review is 1.5.

Review: Escape to Gold Mountain, by David H.T. Wong

Sometimes a book’s message is bigger than the sum of its parts.

Such is the case with David H.T. Wong’s historical fiction/non-fiction hybrid graphic novel, Escape to Gold Mountain (I’ve been trying to settle on a format for titles on this blog, and I’ve decided now: books are underlined!) The “Gold Mountain” of the title is the way early Chinese immigrants referred to Canada and the United States. The message of Wong’s book is particularly resonant, not only for those of Chinese descent, but for anyone impacted by immigration today (i.e. everyone.)
